How Artificial Perfumes Affect On Human Bodies

How Artificial Fragrances Disrupt Hormones?

Understanding Hormones and Their Role in Our Bodies

We are asked repeatedly if perfumes disrupt our hormones and what that even means. We love to help people understand more about their bodies and how best to look after them, so we thought we would get all of the answers in one place.
The chemical messengers, or hormones, are responsible for regulating numerous vital functions within an organism, such as metabolism, growth, mood, and reproductive health, among others. They are secreted from glands within the endocrine system and function through binding to specific receptors within our cells, thereby triggering very important processes throughout the body.
The endocrine system is a network of glands and organs throughout the body that make and control hormones. Guess where you can find them in your body? The key endocrine glands and their locations are:
1. Hypothalamus - Located in the brain, just above the pituitary gland; controls hormone release from the pituitary.
2. Pituitary gland - Located at the base of the brain; often referred to as the "master gland" because it controls other endocrine glands.
3. Pineal gland - Located in the brain, produces melatonin, which helps regulate sleep-wake cycles.
4. Thyroid gland – At the front of the neck; regulates metabolism and energy levels.
5. Parathyroid glands - Four small glands located behind the thyroid regulate calcium levels.
6. Adrenal glands - appended atop the kidneys; produce stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline.
7. Pancreas - Located in the abdomen behind the stomach; it regulates blood sugar via the production of insulin and glucagon.
8. Ovaries (female) - are located in the lower abdomen; they make estrogen and progesterone, crucial for reproduction.
9. Testes (in males) - In the scrotum; it produces testosterone, necessary for male reproductive health.
So, really, this system is all around our body and so important in many respects.
Each of these glands secretes hormones into the bloodstream, which then act on other organs and tissues to bring about balance and normal health. Any interference to this system, for example, is brought about by the presence of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in synthetic perfumes.

What is Hormone Disruption?

It is a disruption in the normal functioning of hormones of the body due to interfering chemicals. These disruptions can lead to health issues that may include various reproductive disorders, metabolic diseases, thyroid dysfunction, developmental issues, and sometimes even an increased risk for certain cancers.

How Can Hormones Be Disrupted?

Both man-made and natural factors can cause hormonal disruption. Stress, diet, lack of sleep, and aging all naturally affect hormone levels. However, unnatural, or environmental, exposure to synthetic chemicals-including those in personal care products, household cleaners, plastics, and perfumes-can considerably contribute to endocrine disruption.

What are hormones, and what is hormone disruption?

How the Chemicals in Your Everyday Life Are Affecting Your Hormones
Synthetic Hormone Disruptors in Perfumes
Many commercial perfumes contain synthetic chemicals that may act like endocrine disruptors. Some of the most concerning ingredients include:
1. Phthalates: Commonly used in fragrances as solvents and fixatives, phthalates have been associated with reproductive and developmental problems.
2. Synthetic musks (Galaxolide, Tonalide, Musk Ketone, Musk Xylene) These chemicals build up in the body and have been shown to interfere with hormone signaling.
3. Parabens – Common perfum preservatives, parabens actually mimic estrogen and were found in human breast cancer tissue.
4. BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene): This is an artificial antioxidant used to stabilize fragrances and has potential endocrine-disrupting effects.

Are Perfume Ingredients Known to Disrupt Hormones?

Most of these ingredients and many more have been the subject of scientific concern. Research has documented that phthalates and synthetic musks accumulate in human tissue, interfere with hormone function, and may be harming human reproduction. The European Union and some states in the United States have limited or banned the use of some phthalates in cosmetics because of concerns about their safety.

This new study took 20 mainstream perfumes and tested them for a specific endocrine disruption effect. They found that 18 out of 20 perfumes contained one or more suspected endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Additionally, several allergens, a reprotoxic substance, and chemicals problematic to the environment were found in these fragrances, yet none of these substances were mentioned on the label.

In an analysis of pollutants in perfumes, they found that "phthalates, aldehydes, parabens, and aluminum-based salts are the most important contaminants in aroma products that are responsible for side effects such as allergies, breast cancer, reproductive disorders, especially in males, skin allergies, nervous system damage and migraine headaches for consumers."
This research particularly has focused on phthalates and their implications for human health. “Chronic exposure to phthalates will adversely influence the endocrine system and functioning of multiple organs, which has negative long-term impacts on the success of pregnancy, child growth and development, and reproductive systems in both young children and adolescents.”
And the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has a comprehensive list of possible harmful ingredients found in synthetic perfumes and the studies that have been conducted.

How do we know if perfumes are affecting us negatively?

Symptoms can be subtle and develop slowly. Potential signs include the following:
1. Hormonal imbalances (irregular menstrual cycles, mood swings, fatigue)
2. Skin sensitivities or allergic reactions
3. Fertility problems
4. Thyroid dysfunction

Can We Know What's in Our Perfumes?

Unfortunately, most commercial perfumes do not provide full disclosure of their ingredients. Many regions allow proprietary fragrance formulations, known as "trade secrets," which enable companies to simply use the word "fragrance" to describe what could be hundreds of undisclosed chemicals. Without transparency, it's incredibly hard to know just what is in those synthetic perfumes and whether they include hormone-disrupting ingredients.

Is there such a thing as non hormone-disrupting perfume?

The best option is to choose 100% natural perfumes. Natural perfumes are those which are manufactured using essential oils, absolutes, and botanical extracts that are derived directly from the plants, without any sort of artificial additives. They will always be using these natural botanicals at a safe level to ensure they are hormone-safe perfumes.

Are natural perfumes safer for hormonal health?

Natural perfumes, such as those from PlantOrigen, have absolutely no synthetic chemicals, phthalates, or artificial musks in them. They are hormone-friendly perfumes. Because they are made only of pure botanical ingredients, the risk of hormone disruption related to synthetic fragrances does not exist in them. Also, a number of essential oils in natural perfumes possess positive impacts on emotional balance and stress release, such as lavender, sandalwood, and rose.

Of course, we always encourage you to consult with your own doctor and health professional to make certain that your concerns and your individual health situation are taken into consideration. We are all different and hence require different approaches.
Some people have allergic reactions to natural ingredients, such as lavender or cinnamon essential oils. Therefore, test and try the 100% natural and hormone-friendly perfumes in a patch test first, so you can see how you react and which ones you prefer. That is what our Mini Sets and Discovery Sets are really good for.
